Ben Kah

Hi, I'm Ben. I'm 63 years old, which makes me the oldest member of the Moving Spirits team. I was born in Haren but have been living in Grolloo for 23 years now. I live there with my girlfriend whom I will marry next year! I have many different hobbies. A big hobby of mine is music. Ever since I was 16, I have been playing in lots of bands, recently in a blues band. I also enjoy walking with my two dogs in the beautiful woods of Drenthe.

What characterizes your role at work?

Part of my job is to build and maintain the websites. I’m not really in direct contact with customers, it’s mostly a solo job. My main job is to work with the different websites, rebuilding and improving them. In addition, I will also support marketing and communications, but my main role is to work as webmaster.

What do you consider a challenge at work?

The industry itself is completely new to me, so it is kind of challenging to work in a business I’ve never worked in before. I have worked in healthcare for many years, as a communications manager. Of course, it’s also a challenge to become part of the team, but I’m sure that will work out soon. I really feel welcome and already a part of this team, they’re just a great bunch of people. Haha, just to let them know: I really don’t want to take on the father role there….

Name one thing you’re sure most people don’t know about you

Hmmm, I’m always open, so I don’t really have any secrets. The only thing I can think of is that I really love to write. In fact, I wrote a little book once. The book I wrote was about basketball; as a volunteer I did the communications for a basketball club called Donar of Groningen for several years. Maybe when I retire I will write another book, maybe a novel?

What do you contribute to the team?

I have only just started working for Moving Spirits, so this is hard for me to answer. Humor is always important to me though, I’ve noticed that it’s already present to a large extent, but maybe I can add some humor here too.

How do you relax on the weekend?

I relax in many ways. For example, I like to walk and bike in nature with my dogs. Relaxation for me also means making music, listening to music and I regularly go to concerts. I am a fanatic Donar (basketball) fan, so I attend every home game, but I also try to go to away games. I am also a golf enthusiast. Unfortunately, I haven’t hit a hole-in-one yet, but hopefully it will happen soon!

Do you have a quote in mind that helps you at work?

My life motto is ‘don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened’

I think that’s a very nice motto. You shouldn’t whine too much and look back at what you don’t have anymore, but cherish the memories you have, be happy with what you still have and appreciate the great things that life still has to offer. There are many blessings to count, for sure.

Beer, wine or spirits?

Spirits, I’m a whiskey lover. I also like wine with dinner, but I can really appreciate a good glass of whiskey. I don’t drink very often, but when I do I like to have a whisky with a friend, I don’t like to drink alone. An occasional gin and tonic in the summer is fine too.

Which country would you like to visit and why?

South Africa! It’s been on my agenda for a while, but I’ve never been there. I had planned the trip before Covid-19, but because of the corona it never happened. I would mainly go for the parks, go on a nice safari and see the Big Five! Of the countries I have visited, the USA is by far my favorite. I love going there.

What’s on your bucket list?

I have done a lot in my life. Scuba diving and skydiving? Check! Traveled a lot? Also done. I flew a small plane for a while as a private pilot, which taught me to see the world from a different perspective. Still, visiting South Africa is on my bucket list. New Zealand seems nice too.

What did you want to become when you were younger?

A commercial pilot. However, beacause I am slightly color blind, I would never pass the tests to become a commercial pilot. So I may never fly commercially. Fortunately, in my current job I never suffer from this slight color blindness, I’ve learned to live with it, and in my work I do many things with color design.
