Matthew Gloag, the owner of the shop, decided to produce blended whiskies to sell around the world. This blend was inspired by a bird native to Scotland – the red partridge, also known as ‘the grouse’. This was the name for the first few years of the brand. The name “Famous Grouse” was born due to the popularity that the brand soon enjoyed. Matthew’s daughter Philippa Gloag designed the logo, a drawing of a Scottish grouse.

Production process of Famous Grouse whisky
The Famous Grouse whisky production process begins with the selection of the finest malt and grain whiskies. These spirits are carefully blended by skilled master blenders to ensure a harmonious balance of aromas and flavors that define Famous Grouse. The barley is first malted and then milled to release the starch within. It is then mixed with hot water to make wort. This is then cooled and yeast is added.
The resulting wash is double distilled in copper stills. This is followed by blending. The blended whisky is then transferred to oak casks for maturation. During this time, the whisky acquires its complexity and character as it interacts with the wood. Finally, the whisky is bottled.
