Bushmills whisky, the oldest licensed distillery worldwide
Bushmills is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. As a wholesaler of Bushmills we are interested in the rich history of the brand. Here is a brief history of the whiskey brand:
The origins of Bushmills (read more at Wikipedia) can be traced back to 1608 when Sir Thomas Phillipps was granted a royal license to open a distillery on the River Bush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. More than 400 years later, Bushmills Original is still making whiskey thanks to the experience and craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation. Towards the end of the 18th century, the distillery became the property of the Boyd family.
In the 19th century the distillery changed hands again and was renamed “The Old Bushmills Distillery”. In 1885 a fire destroyed the distillery, but it was decided to rebuild the distillery and meet the growing demand from America.
In 2005, the company was taken over by Diageo. Bushmills is now known for its variety of whiskies, including the Original, Black Bush and the 10, 16 and 21 year old single malt whiskies.
Bushmills Distillery craftsmanship, how is it made?
There are several key steps in the production of Bushmills whiskey which contribute to the distinctive taste and quality of this Irish whiskey. Here is an overview of the production process:
The malt is ground into a coarse flour known as grist. This grist is mixed with hot water to release the sugars, a process known as mashing. The result is a liquid substance called wort, which is transferred to fermentation vessels, usually made of wood or stainless steel. This process produces a liquid called “wash”. The wash is distilled twice in traditional copper stills. The raw alcohol is then transferred to oak casks for maturation. The distillery uses a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks for maturation. By law, whisky must be matured for a minimum of three years to be considered whisky, but they also offer whiskies with different maturations, such as Bushmills 12, 16 and 21 years.
Bushmills is renowned for its craftsmanship in blending whiskies. After the maturation process, different casks are blended to create the desired flavor profiles.
