History of Talisker Whisky
As a Talisker wholesaler, we are interested in the history of the brand. It dates back to 1830 when the Talisker Distillery was founded by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. They chose the site on the shores of Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye because of the abundance of pure spring water and easy access by boat. By 1863 Talisker (read more at Wikipedia) was the only remaining distillery on the isolated island.
In 1916, the brand was acquired by the then famous Distillers Company Limited (DCL), which later merged with Diageo, one of the largest spirits groups in the world. Talisker whisky launched Talisker 10 Years in 1989 as part of its Classic Malts range. Another great moment came in 2004 when Talisker 18 years was named the world’s best whisky. The distillery still uses traditional methods to produce its whisky, including the use of old copper pot stills.
Talisker production: Unique combination of maritime influences, peat smoke and sweet notes
The production process of Talisker whisky is similar to that of other Scottish single malt whiskies. What makes Talisker Scotch unique is the combination of maritime influences, peat smoke and sweet notes that come from the production process. The rugged environment of the Isle of Skye also contributes to the quirky nature of this Scottish single malt whisky.
Talisker typically uses peat smoke to dry the barley, which contributes to the smoky flavor of the whisky. The dried malt is ground into a coarse flour known as grist. The sugar-rich liquid, called wort, is transferred to fermentation tanks where it is left to ferment. This process usually takes several days. The resulting liquid, called “wash”, is distilled twice in copper pot stills. The first distillation takes place in the wash still; the second, in the spirit still, further increases the alcohol content.
It is then transferred to oak casks for maturation. Talisker mainly uses ex-bourbon casks. The whisky is matured for a minimum of 10 years, which allows time for the flavors to develop. Finally it is bottled.
Talisker 10, 18 or Talisker Skye, choose from a wide assortment
Although the distillery is small compared to some other producers, Talisker Single Malt has released some new expressions in recent years to suit different taste preferences. Here are some of their most famous whiskies:
Talisker 10 Year Old is Talisker’s most iconic and accessible expression. It reflects its distinctive flavor profile. It has notes of peat smoke, sea influences, spiciness and a hint of sweetness.
Talisker Storm is a more powerful and smoky alternative to the 10 Year Old. It has more intense peat smoke and sea influences, with more spicy and tangy notes.
Talisker Distillers Edition undergoes additional maturation in sherry casks, which adds extra complexity and sweetness to the whisky. It has hints of dark fruit, vanilla and spice.
Talisker 18 Year Old is a premium expression, matured in oak casks for 18 years. This results in a deeper, softer and more refined whisky with complex layers of fruit, oak and spice.
Talisker Port Ruighe has an additional finish in port casks, giving it a fruity sweetness that goes well with the smoky and salty Talisker style.
Talisker 25 Year Old is a rare and luxurious edition. It is complex and balanced, with a remarkably smooth smokiness and deep layers of fruit, spice and oak.
Talisker Skye offers a round, sweet flavor profile with fresh citrus, sweet smoke, sharp spices and traditional briny notes.
Please note that Talisker occasionally releases special releases and limited editions, which can vary in age, flavor profile and price. You can find all of these in our Sales Portal, where you can always put together a (mixed) order at competitive prices.
