Appleton, the unique Jamaican rum for more than 270 years
The story of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum began more than 270 years ago, in 1749 to be precise, in the Nassau Valley. The estate was originally planted with sugar cane to produce sugar. Later, in the 19th century, the estate began to focus more on rum production.
Over the years, Appleton Rum (read more at Wikipedia) changed ownership several times. Finally, in 1916, it was purchased by the Lindo family, who still own and manage the estate nowadays. The unique Jamaican style of rum, characterized by the use of pot stills and tropical aging, created a unique flavor that was appreciated worldwide.
Appleton Signature has invested in modern production methods and tourism. They have opened visitor centers where guests can discover the history of the estate, see the production process and taste different rums. Over the years, they won several rewards.
Appleton Estate, the production process to create a special rum
As an Appleton wholesaler, we are interested in the brand’s production process. Appleton Estate Rum’s production process is meticulous and traditional, contributing to the unique flavor and quality of their products.
It all starts with the harvesting of sugar cane on their own estate. This is taken to the sugar cane mill, where it is pressed to release the sugar cane juice, which is then transferred to the fermentation tanks. Here the natural fermentation process begins to convert the sugar into alcohol. The mixture of molasses and limestone is filtered. After fermentation, the liquid is distilled. Appleton Signature uses traditional copper pot stills and column stills. The use of pot stills adds complexity and depth of flavor, while column stills help to achieve a higher alcohol content.
Appleton Rum is renowned for its use of American oak barrels, which have been used to age bourbon. An important aspect of the rum production of the brand is the blending of different rum distillates to achieve the desired flavor profile. After aging, the rum is filtered, diluted with water to the desired alcohol content and bottled for sale. The result? An Appleton Signature Blend.
