Angostura’s history

The original Angostura brand originates from the Venezualan town of Angostura (now known as Ciudad Bolívar). The drink was originally invented as a tonic by German surgeon general Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, working with Simón Bolivar’s army. Using the botanical knowledge of the local native population, this tonic was said to have restorative properties.
Counterintuitively, the original Angostura never contained angostura bark, instead using closely guarded ingredients only known exactly to its manufacturers.
The Angostura bitters were first sold by Siegert in 1824, resulting in the founding of an actual distillery in 1830. By 1853, the brand was sold internationally. By 1875, production had moved to Port of Spain, Trinidad, in order to facilitate shipping. This is where the factory remains till this day.
The medal on the Angostura label serves as a reminder of the brand’s prestigious history: won during the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair as a celebration of culture and entertainment, it tells a story of world-wide grandeur and class.
After a shortage in 2009, the brand is back and stronger than ever. Selling other liquors such as rums as well, Angostura is one brand that cannot lack in your selection.
