History of Ballantines, the perfect blend for a unique taste experience
As a Ballantines wholesaler, we are interested in the rich history of the brand. The story begins in 1827 when George Ballantine opened a small grocery shop in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. Here he began blending different whiskies to create a unique taste experience.
In 1881, George’s sons took over. They moved the business to a larger site and concentrated on perfecting their blending skills. The height of recognition came in 1895 when Ballantine’s received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria. The brand continued to grow and prosper, and by the end of the 19th century Ballantine’s had gained a worldwide reputation for its outstanding whiskies. Ballantine’s Finest was launched in 1910.
More and more variants were produced, including Ballantines 12 Years Old, launched in 1960, followed by Ballantines 21 Y.O. in 1993. Today Ballantine’s is produced by Pernod Ricard, a world-renowned drinks conglomerate. However, they remain true to the legacy of George Ballantine, with attention to detail and a passion for creating exceptional whiskies.
Ballantines passion: the production of the finest whisky
Every aspect of the Ballantine’s whisky production process, from selecting the finest ingredients to maturing the whisky, contributes to the unique taste and quality for which the brand is renowned. The Ballantine’s whisky production process combines age-old traditions with modern technology to achieve a balanced and distinctive taste.
Ballantine’s uses a combination of grain and malt whiskies to create its distinctive blends. Barley, the main ingredient in malt whisky, is soaked and then germinated to activate enzymes. This process helps to convert starch into sugar, which is essential for fermentation. The ground barley is mixed with hot water to release the sugars. This mixture is poured into large vats and mixed with yeast to start fermentation. The resulting liquid, the wash, is distilled twice in traditional pot stills. The heart of the distillation, known as the ‘middle cut’, is selected for further processing.
Now comes the part where Ballantine demonstrates its mastery of the art of blending. The different malt and grain whiskies are carefully blended. The depth, color and character of the whisky is then created through maturation in oak casks. After maturation, the whiskies are often finished by resting briefly in different casks, such as sherry casks or bourbon casks.
