On one of the last days before his execution, the citizens of the town Cognac, where he had lived all his life, stormed the prison where he was being kept captive. After his release, Baptiste fled to England to hide during the years of the French Revolution. Two years later, when the country laid down its arms, Baptiste returned to Cognac.
Upon his return, he bought Château de Cognac in 1795. This castle dates back to the 11th century. Jean-Baptiste was greatly impressed by the characteristics of the place. Meters thick walls, a very consistent humidity level and temperature inside the cellars. In short, the perfect recipe for a uniquely flavoured spirit. The business stayed in the family for multiple years. Over the years, the popularity of this spirit increased and as its popularity grew, it caught the attention of large liquor brands. Baron Otard cognac was eventually bought by the Italian brand Martini & Rossi. Today, this famous cognac is a subsidiary of the Bacardi Group.
