Bowmore Whisky, the first distillery on Islay, Scotland
The first distillery on Islay to be granted a licence, Bowmore (read more at Wikipedia) was officially founded in 1779 by John Simpson. Over the years the brand passed through several owners including the Mutter family and later the Sherriff family. James Bell Sherriff bought the distillery for the second time in 1925 and renamed it Sherriff’s Bowmore Distillery.
During the Second World War, the distillery was temporarily closed due to a shortage of barley and the distillery’s commitment to the war effort. The brand introduced several whiskies that built the brand’s reputation. In 1993, for example, the first of the coveted Black Bowmore trilogy was released. Other examples include Bowmore Legend and Bowmore 12 Y.O. They have also experimented with different types of casks for maturation, such as sherry casks and wine casks.
In 2014, the company was acquired by Beam Suntory. Bowmore remains one of Islay’s most respected distilleries, praised for its balanced combination of peat smoke, salty sea influences and fruity notes in its whiskies.
Production process of Bowmore: over 240 years of craftsmanship
Working with the finest quality oak casks and a tradition passed down from generation to generation, Bowmore’s craftsmanship has been refined. The old stone warehouse on the edge of Loch Indaal, No. 1 Vaults, is where the distinctive whisky is made.
Unlike most distilleries, Bowmore still has its own Malt Barn, an airy shed where they malt their own barley and start the germination process. In the kiln, germination is stopped and the barley is dried so that it can be milled into wheat. This is also where the Single Malt Scotch Whisky gets its subtle peat smoke character. The malted barley is now dry and taken to the Porteus malt mill where it is ground into wheat.
The grist then goes to the mash house, where it is added to hot water to produce a sugary liquid called wort. In the mash tun, the grist is added to the hot water where it mashes, or stews, giving it a rich dark color and a strong malty aroma. Once full, it is time to add yeast to the wort and let the miracle of fermentation begin.
The production process then continues in the stillhouse. The still house is the heart of the distillery. The first distillation takes place in two wash stills. The second distillation takes place in the smaller spirit still. Finally, maturation takes place in a number of used casks to develop the different colors and flavors of the whisky. Casks can also be combined to create a wonderful combination of flavors. Bowmore 15 Year Old, for example, is double matured, spending 12 years in ex-Bourbon casks and the final three years in ex-Sherry casks to create its distinctive character.

Bowmore 10 Year Old
Bowmore 10 Y.O. has subtle peat smoke with vanilla and caramel flavors from the oak casks in which the whisky is matured. You can also expect mild spicy notes, such as a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg.
Bowmore 12 Year Old
Bowmore 12 Year Old has a light peat smoke with hints of citrus, honey and vanilla. The palate has notes of dried fruit, toffee and a subtle salty flavor. The finish is soft and smoky.
Bowmore 15 Year Old Darkest
The 15 year old “Darkest” is matured in Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a richer and more complex whisky. It has notes of dark fruit, chocolate, coffee and spices, with a smoky undertone. The finish is long and warm.
Bowmore 18 Year Old
The 18 year old Bowmore has a deep and elegant character. Expect flavors of dark chocolate, caramel, raisins and dried fruit.
Bowmore No. 1
Bowmore No. 1 is an unaged expression with vibrant fruity notes. It has aromas of citrus, apple and pear, followed by flavors of vanilla, honey and a light smokiness. The finish is soft and refreshing.
Bowmore 25 Year Old
The 25 year old Bowmore has aromas of tropical fruit, mango, apricot, vanilla and a subtle smokey note. The finish is silky smooth and long lasting.
Bowmore have released a series of Vault Editions, each with a unique flavor profile. Bowmore also has a partnership with Aston Martin. Together they have released a number of limited editions, including the Bowmore Aston Martin 10, 15 and 18 years old.
