History of Johnnie Walker whisky
As a Johnnie Walker wholesale, we are always curious about the story behind our liquor brands.
Looking at the history of Johnnie Walker (read more at Wikipedia), we go back to the year 1805, in which John Walker was born. In 1819, the Walker family decided to invest money in an Italian warehouse, grocery store and wine and spirits store in Kilmarnock, Scotland. By 1825, Walker was selling spirits himself, including rum, brandy, gin and whiskey.
Soon he decided to deal in whiskey. However, blending grain whiskies with malt whiskies was still prohibited, so he sold blended malt whiskies as well as grain whiskies. The whiskies he sold were made to order; at the time he did not have his own brand. This came years later, when he began using his name on labels and sold a blended malt as Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky. After John died in 1857, the brand remained popular, and John Walker’s son and grandson became responsible for establishing the whiskey as a favorite brand.
The Spirits Act of 1860 legalized the blending of grain whiskies with malt whiskies. A blended Scotch whisky was being produced by the Walkers soon. Alexander Walker, John’s son, introduced the brand’s distinctive square bottle in 1860. In 1865, the first commercial blend was created, named Old Highland Whisky.
In 1893, the Cardhu distillery was purchased by the Walkers to bolster supplies of one of the most important malt whiskies of the Johnnie Walker blends. In subsequent years, the range of Johnnie Walker whiskey expanded, all bottled in the same way but with the only difference being the color of the label. In 1923, Walker purchased the Mortlach distillery to further their strategy. Until 2012, the whiskey was still produced and bottled in Kilmarnock. However, the brand’s current owners, Diageo, decided to close all operations in Kilmarnock by 2012.
Johnnie Walker wholesale: a unique Scotch whisky
Before we as Johnnie Walker’s distributor can sell this whisky, an extensive production process precedes it. It all starts with the grains, which contain a lot of starch that must be converted into soluble sugars to make alcohol. Molting takes place, with hot water added and heated until the grain thinks it is time to grow. The growth process is stopped by drying the grain in an oven, this promotes drying and gives the liquid more flavor. The grain is then ground in a mill so it can be mixed with water.
Heated water is mixed to extract the soluble sugars, the resulting hot, sweet liquid will be drained and cooled. Yeast is added and fermentation begins, followed by two distillations to reduce the water content and increase the concentration of alcohol and flavor. Copper stills are used in the production of Johnnie Walker.
Finally, the product is transferred to specially treated oak barrels to age for a minimum of three years. Only then may it legally be called Scotch Whisky. Today, Johnnie Walker makes more Scotch Whisky than any other whisky house in the world. All the more for us as Johnnie Walker supplier, then!
