History of Jose Cuervo

All the way back in 1758, Don José Antonio de Cuervo founded a blue agave plant farm in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. He was given this plot of land by King Ferdinand VI of Spain for moving to Mexico and expanding Spanish borders. His farm was called the Taberna de Cuervo, after his family. Here, they distilled their own tequila, albeit not yet wide-scale commercially. After all, there was still a prohibition in place that would not allow the sale of tequila.
It wasn’t until 1795, however that Don José’s son, José María Guadalupe de Cuervo, was granted permission to start distributing tequila, and the tequila industry was born.
Jose Cuervo was the first actual brand of tequila, which was first known as “mezcal de tequila”. The “mezcal” part, however, was dropped in 1893 after the brand had gained a massive amount of popularity.

Even nowadays, Jose Cuervo is the most popular tequila brand in the world. In fact, a fifth of all the tequila sold worldwide was distilled by the family-owned brand, which is still run by Don José Antonio de Cuervo’s descendants. As of 2013, with Juan-Domingo Beckmann as the actual sixth-generation company director, Jose Cuervo is distributed by Proximo Spirits.

In short, Especial Silver is an unaged mix tequila, gained by simply fermenting and distilling blue agave and adding sugarcane spirit. This is a white or “blanco” tequila. It is, however, not to be confused with a silver or “plato” tequila, which is actually a decolourized golden tequila that was kept in barrels for months or years on end. Especial Gold is an aged tequila that has gained its typical golden hue by being stored in oak barrels for a set amount of time. This product has a richer flavour than its Silver counterpart and is available in several variants.
