History of Plantation Rum
As a Plantation rum distributor, we are interested in the story behind the brand. It all started with Alexandre Gabriel, a businessman with a real passion and curiosity for rum making. In 1989, Alexander Gabriel discovered Maison Ferrand, one of the oldest distilled brands in the Cognac region.
In the 1990s, Alexandre Gabriel combed the Caribbean in search of the region’s best rums. In 1999, Alexandre Gabriel purchased a historic rum distillery in Barbados, known as the West Indies Rum Distillery. Since then, Plantation’s rums have been produced here. It was Gabriel’s vision to create a range of rums that showcased the unique characteristics of the different Caribbean countries and their rum making traditions.
Over the years, Plantation Rum has won numerous awards. The brand has expanded its portfolio to include a diverse range of rums, from smooth and elegant expressions to more robust and flavourful offerings.
Plantation Rum distributor: double maturation process
Plantation rum has a distinctive, unique character that you can really taste in the rum. What makes this rum so special is the way it is made, from the origin of the sugar cane to the maturation and blending of the spirits.
Sugar cane, the main ingredient in rum production, is grown and harvested in the Caribbean. Once harvested, the sugar cane is crushed to extract the juice, which contains natural sugars. The cane juice is then transferred to fermentation tanks where yeast is added. Through a process called fermentation, alcohol is produced; this liquid is also called “reed wine” or “molasses wine”. The reed wine is then distilled to separate the alcohol from the other components.
After distillation, the rum is aged in oak barrels. Plantation rum follows a unique “double maturation” process. First, the rum is aged in its country of origin, usually in bourbon barrels. It is then transported to France for secondary maturation in smaller French oak casks. This double maturation process contributes to the rum’s complexity and flavor development. It should be noted that the specific production process may vary depending on the expression and collaboration with partner distilleries in the Caribbean.
