History of Diplomatico rum

The history of Diplomático rum is rooted in Venezuela and begins in the late 1950s. The distillery was originally founded under the name “Licorerías Unidas S.A.” (LUSA) and was located in La Miel, in the Táchira region of Venezuela. Its aim was to produce quality rum for domestic and international markets.
In the 1980s, Diplomatico was introduced to the market, immediately becoming LUSA’s premium rum line. Diplomático rum’s success can be attributed to several factors. First, the distillery uses locally grown sugarcane, harvested from the humid plains of Venezuela. Known for its rich flavor profile, this sugar cane is an essential part of Diplomático rum’s distinctive taste.
Diplomatico Rum supplier: a unique, smooth flavor
At Diplomatico, they have a set production process from which the premium rum is created. Step by step, we go through it with you:
- Sugar cane; Diplomático only uses local sugar cane, most of which is grown within 100 kilometers of the distillery. Two different products are extracted from the sugar cane: sugar cane honey for complex and heavy rums and molasses for light rums.
- Fermentation; this is the part of the process where the sugar is converted into alcohol, a crucial stage where most of the aromatic compounds are created.
- Distillation; Diplomático uses a unique combination of three distillation systems to produce a wide range of distillates. The Barbet Column (light, spicy and fruity), the Batch Kettle (tropical, caramel flavor) and the Copper Pot Still (deep, rich and heavy rum).
- Aging; Diplomático’s facilities are located in a privileged microclimate that allows for optimal aging. Ex-Bourbon, ex-Single Malt Whisky and new American oak casks are used.
- Blending; after the aging process, the master blenders combine the different rums through the art of blending.
Every drop of Diplomatico rum is made with a rum-making tradition passed down from generation to generation. It has a unique smooth flavor that has made it one of the world’s most popular and awarded super premium rums.
