What is armagnac?
Before we tell you more about Janneau Armagnac, let us explain exactly what Armagnac exactly is. It is a type of spirit produced in the Gascony region of south-west France. It is similar to Cognac, but the main difference between Armagnac and Cognac lies in the production areas and methods. For example, armagnac is usually distilled once in an alembic, as opposed to the double distillation used for cognac. History of Janneau Armagnac
Armagnac Janneau is one of the oldest French armagnacs, dating back to 1851 when Pierre-Etienne Janneau founded his first distillery with Joseph Dubourdieu in Condom, Gascony. At that time it was called ‘Maison Dubourdieu Janneau & Cie’. In the years that followed, their cognac steadily gained a reputation for excellence and soon became a recognised brand in the Cognac region.
Janneau Cognac has an impressive heritage of more than 170 years, with each generation passing on its expertise to the next. In 1974, the Maison Janneau was acquired by Martell & Co. Since 2014, it has been owned by the Spirit France group.
Over the years, Janneau Grand Armagnac has won numerous prizes and awards, recognising the brand for its exceptional products. The combination of old traditions and modern technology has helped Janneau to develop a wide range of high quality cognacs.
Janneau Grand Armagnac, a unique production process
Janneau Cognac’s production process is steeped in tradition and craftsmanship. It begins with the selection of the finest grapes from the Cognac region, including Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche. After careful harvesting, the grapes are pressed and fermented to produce a quality wine.
The wine is then distilled in traditional copper alembics. Janneau’s fame is partly due to its unique mastery of both distillation methods authorized by the appellation decree: continuous distillation with Armagnac alambics and double distillation with Charente pot stills. Janneau cognac is usually distilled once. This single distillation contributes to the robust character and complex flavor of Janneau Cognac.
The eaux-de-vie are then transferred to oak barrels where they rest and mature for many years. The aeration process of Janneau grand Armagnac is unique in armagnac. The contents of the barrels are periodically emptied and blended before being transferred to new barrels. The length of time the eaux-de-vie is aged depends on the type of eau-de-vie desired. For example, Janneau XO is aged for at least 30 years, Janneau Napoleon for 6 years and Janneau VSOP for up to 20 years. Once mature, the different eaux-de-vie are carefully blended by Janneau’s master blender.
