History of Teacher’s Whisky

The history of Teacher’s Highland Cream goes back a long way. It all started when the Teacher family started distilling whisky in 1830. William Teacher, the head of the family during that time, would distil the whisky and put it in bottles. This drink was then being sold in his wife’s grocery store. Back then, there was no real brand attached to this drink.
This changed when William Teacher granted a licence for his whisky in 1856. This was the beginning of the iconic brand. William set up his dram shop as soon as he received his licence. When he died in 1876, his sons took over the business and changed the name to William Teacher & Sons Ltd. During this time the brand gained immense popularity and operations moved to a larger distillery.
After the prohibition of alcoholic beverages ended in the US, Teacher’s set their eyes on the US market. These days, the United States is still a huge importer of the famous whisky. In the late 1970’s, Teacher’s & Sons was bought by Allied Breweries. This was followed by a complete takeover by the Chivas brothers (famous for their Chivas Regal).
These days, Teacher’s Whisky is a respected and incredibly famous whisky throughout the world. It is currently in the hands of Suntory.
