History of Smirnoff Vodka
For us as a wholesaler, Smirnoff vodka is one of our key brands. At Moving Spirits we value our partners from both ends of the distribution channel. We are therefore interested in the history of our partnering distributors.
Smirnoff Vodka is a Russian brand of vodka and dates back to the Tsar era. Pjotr Arenjevitsj Smirnov started producing vodka in his distillery back in 1864. Back then, Smirnoff distinguished itself from other vodka producers by filtering their spirit through charcoal. This charcoal was produced by the wood of the Silver Birch, giving their vodka its unique flavor.
By filtering the vodka, Smirnoff became one of the most popular vodkas in the country. Multiple Tsars and army generals were enjoying the unique flavors of this drink.
When the October Revolution started in 1917 the production of Smirnoff vodka came to a halt. Vladimir Smirnov, son of the founder Pjotr fled the country and continued the production of vodka in Paris. In 1933 Smirnoff moved its production to the United States, but demand was low since whiskey was the drink of preference by most Americans. At the verge of bankruptcy he decided to label their vodka as ‘White Whiskey’. This was a hit and their sales were increasing.
Vodka became an important aspect of American culture. In the 60’s the brand was seen in many major hollywood movies where actors were enjoying the unique taste. Their vodka is still being produced by Pjotr’s original recipe, but some methods of the distilling process are changed. Smirnoff vodka is currently being manufactured in 5 different continents, which makes the composition of the drink slightly different from place to place.
In 1990 the brand launched Smirnoff Ice, which immediately became a popular drink among young people.
